UK based businesses that make emissions to air, land and water are regulated by the Environment agency under strict European and UK laws, to protect the environment and human health. Any company that needs to comply with these laws needs permission from the Environment agency to operate. Permission usually comes in the form of a permit, which often requires the company to monitor emissions.
Businesses either monitor their emissions all the time, known as continuous monitoring, or at times defined in their permit, known as spot tests or periodic monitoring. In both cases the monitoring must meet certain quality requirements and must be undertaken using approved monitoring equipment.
Emerson Process Management has analysers that have been approved by Sira environmental, who operate the certification scheme on behalf of the Environment agency.
Gas analysers
Emerson Process Management has gained UK MCERTS approval for its Rosemount Analytical range of gas analysers for continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMs). The approval covers the MLT 1, MLT 2, MLT 3/4, TFID and CLD analysers, which have been tested and found to comply with the UK Environment Agency’s performance standards for emission monitoring. The MLT series of NGA 2000 analysers offer multi-component, multi-method analysis using non-dispersive infrared (NIR), ultraviolet (NDUV) thermal conductivity, paramagnetic and electrochemical sensor technologies. The MLT series is used to measure the concentrations of NOx (NO and NO2), CO, SO2 and O2.
The Rosemount Analytical TFID (Thermo Flame Ionisation Detector) and the NGA 2000 CLD (Chemiluminescence Detector) analysers have also been approved, these extend the emissions measurement capability to include measurement of volatile organic carbon (VOCs)/ total hydrocarbon (CH) and lower levels of NOx (NO/ NOx).
The Rosemount Analytical Oxymitter zirconia analyser is the latest of Emerson’s gas analytical products to receive MCERTS certification enabling users to monitor the levels of oxygen in flue gas.
Liquid Analysers
Emerson Process Management has gained UK MCERTS approval for its Rosemount Analytical range of liquid analysers and sensors that are used to monitor discharges to the UK’s rivers, smaller watercourses and the sea. The loop approvals cover any combination of XMT, 54E, 1055 and 5081 transmitters with 399, 399VP and 381+ sensors. These have been tested and found to comply with the UK Environment Agency’s performance standards for continuous water on-line analysers.
